Book Review: Unearthly by Cynthia Hand

Novels about Angels seem to be escalating to the top of everyone’s MUST READ list lately (The Fallen, Halo, Hush Hush, ect…) so considering I hadn’t read any books that center around Angels, I thought I’d give one a chance, not expecting much out of it. What’s it about? Let’s see how short I can make this: In this book, if you’re an Angel you’re given a purpose when you’re young that you MUST fulfill.  It’s why you live and breathe.  The protagonist starts getting [very vague] visions of her purpose which leads to her and her family moving to Wyoming so that Clara can meet the boy she’s supposed to save.  Of course, things get in the way, and that’s all I’ll say for now.  The one think I look for and notice right away when reading is the characterization.  I think the characters in a book are as important as the plot, if not more important. The characters in this book were so original, fun to read and had a depth to them that some YA characters lack. It made the book 100x better to read, and you’ll start thinking that you know these characters in real life (I wish).  Throughout the book, Cynthia Hand keeps the suspense strong and only hints at the twists in the stories, which brings me to the ending.  One thing everybody loves is a good cliff hanger of an ending (well maybe not everybody....) and Cynthia Hand ever give that to you!  I don’t want to spoil it for readers who haven’t gotten the chance to read or haven’t yet finished this book but I can guarantee you that you will be surprised and left sitting there with your jaw dropped open. I’m quite eager to get my hands on the next book in January (“Hallowed”) because I mustmustmust know what happens next because the ending does affect so many different parts of the plot and the characters.  This is a story about following your destiny or following your heart, and the Angel aspect of it creates more twists and turns and keep readers on the edge of their seat until the early morning.
One question for those who have read it: Team Christian or Team Tucker?
